This is the most common suspension question we get from customers, and it deserves a proper answer rather than a sales pitch. Both lowering springs and coilovers will drop your car. Both will change how it handles. But they do so in different ways, with different costs, and with different practical consequences for how the car drives day to day.
Here is what each one actually is, what each gives you, and how to decide.
What lowering springs are
A lowering spring is a direct replacement for your factory coil spring. The diameter is the same. The mounting points are the same. The only meaningful difference is that the aftermarket spring is wound to sit shorter and stiffer than the factory unit.
You bolt them in. They bolt to your existing damper. Nothing else changes.
The drop is usually somewhere between 20mm and 35mm front and rear, depending on the brand and the kit you choose. Eibach Sport Springs typically sit at the lower end of that range, with H&R Sport Springs slightly more aggressive. H&R also makes a "Super Sport" version for buyers chasing a deeper drop on platforms where it is structurally safe.
What coilovers are
A coilover is a complete replacement for your factory suspension. It combines a spring and a damper into one assembled unit, and it bolts in where the factory damper and spring used to live.
The key difference is the spring perch. On a coilover, the perch is threaded onto the damper body. You can spin the perch up or down using a spanner wrench to change how much spring sits above the platform, which changes the ride height. That means you can set the car at any height within the kit's adjustment range, not just the single height a fixed lowering spring would give you.
Most quality coilovers also include damping adjustment. A simple kit gives you one knob per corner that adjusts compression and rebound together. A more sophisticated kit gives you two knobs, letting you tune compression and rebound separately. H&R Street Performance coilovers are the entry point on most European platforms. Brands like Bilstein, KW, and Ohlins occupy higher tiers, but H&R sits in the sweet spot for most street-driven cars.
Performance: the real difference
This is where the conversation usually gets oversimplified. A lowering spring on a factory damper is a compromise. The spring is stiffer than what the damper was tuned for, so the damper has to work harder to control the now stiffer spring. The factory damper will do its job, but it will wear out faster than it would with the factory spring it was matched to.
A coilover is a matched system. The spring rate and the damper valving are engineered together. There is no mismatch, which means longer component life and more consistent behaviour over the life of the kit.
In terms of cornering grip, the difference is meaningful but not enormous. On a stock BMW M3, a quality lowering spring will measurably improve grip and reduce body roll. A quality coilover will go further, but the gap is in the order of 10 to 15 percent for a typical street setup, not the night and day difference some forum threads suggest.
Ride quality
This is where most buyer expectations go wrong. People hear "lowering spring" and think cheap and harsh. They hear "coilover" and think expensive and uncomfortable.
The reality is the opposite, particularly with quality brands. A well-engineered lowering spring matched to the factory damper will ride better than a cheap coilover with poor damper valving. A great coilover, set up properly with quality dampers, will ride better than a great lowering spring.
The key word is quality. A no-name eBay coilover will ride terribly because the damper valving is generic and the spring rates are guessed at. A no-name lowering spring will ride terribly because it is too stiff for the factory damper to control. Buy from manufacturers that publish their engineering data.
Adjustability
This is the single biggest advantage of coilovers and the reason most enthusiasts eventually switch. A coilover lets you set the car at exactly the ride height you want, including the option to corner balance the car, which means setting different heights at each wheel to compensate for fuel tank weight, driver weight, or chassis differences. It lets you adjust the damping to suit how you drive, softer for daily commuting and stiffer for track days. And it lets you make changes over time, as tyres wear, as you add more grip with stickier rubber, or as your driving style changes, without buying new parts.
Lowering springs give you exactly one ride height and exactly one feel, set by the manufacturer for the average use case.
Cost
Lowering springs are significantly cheaper. A quality Eibach or H&R kit sits in the AUD 400 to AUD 700 range for most platforms.
Coilovers start at around AUD 1,800 for an entry-level kit like H&R Street Performance. Premium options like KW V3 or Ohlins Road and Track land in the AUD 3,500 to AUD 6,000 range.
Installation cost is also higher for coilovers because there is more to set up. A coilover install requires a proper four-wheel alignment, ride height measurement, and ideally corner balancing. Lowering springs need an alignment but no balancing.
Which one suits you
Buy lowering springs if you want a moderate, set-and-forget drop with most of the handling improvement, on a budget, and you are happy to live with the height the manufacturer chose. The car will look better, corner harder, and feel more planted. The factory damper will wear faster than stock but will still last for years.
Buy coilovers if you want adjustable ride height, adjustable damping, longer component life, and a properly matched suspension system. You will spend more, both on parts and installation, but the result is a far more capable platform.
The middle ground many buyers miss is a quality lowering spring paired with a damper upgrade, such as Bilstein B6 shocks matched to the new spring rate. This costs more than springs alone but less than a full coilover kit, and gives you a properly matched system without the adjustability of coilovers.
The bottom line
If you want the lowest cost path to a better-handling car that also looks the part, lowering springs are the right answer. If you want full control over how your suspension behaves, and you plan to keep the car long enough to benefit from the adjustability, coilovers are worth the investment.
Do not buy either from a brand you have never heard of. The suspension is what keeps the car on the road, and cheap suspension components are not a place to save money.
