How to Tell Real Carbon Fibre From Fake

Carbon fibre parts carry a certain prestige, and where there is prestige there are imitations. Whether you are buying a bonnet, a set of mirror caps, or an interior trim piece, it pays to know whether you are looking at genuine structural carbon fibre or a cheaper look-alike. The difference affects strength, weight, price, and longevity, so learning to spot the real thing protects both your money and your car.

What counts as real carbon fibre

Genuine carbon fibre is a composite, made from woven strands of carbon locked in resin and cured to form a light, strong part. When people talk about fake carbon, they usually mean one of two things, either a plastic part with a printed carbon-look pattern, often called hydro-dipped or carbon-look, or a part where a single thin cosmetic layer of carbon is laid over a cheaper base with no structural benefit. Neither delivers the strength or weight saving of the real thing.

How to tell real carbon fibre from fake

You do not need to be an expert to catch most fakes. A few simple checks cover the majority of cases, looking at the weave, feeling the surface and weight, and inspecting the back of the part.

Look at the weave and finish

On genuine carbon, the weave has real depth and sits beneath a clear coat, and the pattern follows the contours of the part naturally, sometimes with slight imperfections where the cloth wraps a curve. A printed fake often looks too perfect and too flat, the pattern can distort oddly around edges, and it may not line up correctly at seams. Hold the part at an angle to the light and the genuine weave shows a subtle three-dimensional texture under the lacquer.

Check the back and the weight

The back of a genuine part usually shows carbon weave too, or at least a resin-and-fibre texture, rather than smooth painted plastic. Real carbon is also noticeably light and rigid for its size. If a bonnet or panel feels as heavy as steel or flexes like ordinary plastic, be suspicious. Tapping it gives a harder, higher sound than plastic as well.

Dry versus wet carbon

Even among genuine parts there is a quality spread. Wet carbon, the more common type, is hand-laid and can have slightly more resin and small cosmetic variations. Dry carbon, made with pre-impregnated cloth and cured under pressure, is lighter, more consistent, and more expensive. Both are real carbon fibre, but if you are paying a dry-carbon price you should be receiving dry-carbon quality, so ask the seller which process was used.

  • Weave depth: genuine carbon has three-dimensional texture under a clear coat, fakes look flat.
  • Pattern flow: real cloth follows curves naturally, printed patterns distort at edges.
  • Weight and rigidity: real carbon is light and stiff, not heavy or floppy.
  • The back: genuine parts usually show weave or resin texture, not smooth plastic.

There is nothing wrong with buying a carbon-look part if you know that is what it is and you are paying accordingly. The problem is paying a genuine carbon price for a printed plastic piece. Buy from sellers who are clear about materials and process, and who stand behind quality carbon and aero rather than dressing up cheap parts.

Telling real carbon fibre from fake comes down to a few honest checks, the depth and flow of the weave, the weight and rigidity, and what the back of the part looks like. Genuine carbon is light, stiff, and shows real woven texture, while fakes look too flat, feel too heavy, and hide plastic behind the pattern.
